Largely covered by dense forest, the country is planted with palm oil, coffee and, above all, rubber trees. The subsoil is rich in diamonds, gold and iron. Liberia still derives significant revenue from flag loans (the Liberian fleet is the second largest in the world). Liberia’s population is made up of two groups of very different origins and sizes: on the one hand, the descendants of African-American immigrants who arrived in the early 19th century, and on the other, the indigenous ethnic groups. But the upheavals that occurred after 1980 led to a relative mixing of the population, at the same time as a high level of emigration to neighbouring countries. Until Samuel Doe’s coup d’état in 1980, the Libero-Americans (less than 5% of the total population), concentrated in the cities and on the coast, made up the property-owning and ruling class, rich in agricultural and mining resources, which had experienced real development after the Second World War. This process was initiated by President William Tubman, a Liberian-American who remained in power for twenty-seven years (from 1944 to 1971), while including « natives » in his administrative responsibilities, and who equipped the country with infrastructure (roads, ports, airports). The civil war that broke out in 1989 ruined the country’s economy, which had already suffered under President Doe’s regime. During the 1980s, GDP fell by around 2.1% a year, and the situation has only worsened since.
